Italic with an edge
Live Calligraphy Workshop on Zoom. Three consecutive Wednesdays at 18:00 CEST: June 17th, June 24th, and July 1st. Classes will be recorded and available for three months for review.
The Idea
Traditional Italic is beautiful, but what happens when you introduce sharp, gothic-inspired qualities? Join me for a three-week live journey into the dynamic, expressive side of Italic calligraphy.
In this class, we are moving beyond standard forms. We will explore the striking contrast between daring, angular strokes and the fine, subtle details that bring refinement to your writing. From lively, natural movement to sophisticated, built-up letters, you will learn how to inject personality and tension into your art.
Workshop
When: Wednesdays – June 17, June 24, and July 1, 2026.

Group Size: 10 to 35 students. (Full refund if the minimum is not met).
Dynamic
During lesson 1, we'll explore the minuscule alphabet and the core ideas behind creating dynamic, sharp, and angular letterforms. We'll address specific technical challenges, focusing on proper spacing and mastering the rhythm necessary to keep your writing consistent.
Elegant
During lesson 2, we'll focus on the majuscules, learning how to build up the strokes and further utilize pen manipulation. We'll also explore the concept of dynamic balance in our compositions by manipulating the forms of the capitals and playing with their relationship to the minuscules.
Creative
In lesson 3, we'll dive into advanced variations by adjusting overall stroke weight, proportions, and introducing a gothic flavor inspired by Blackletter scripts. Finally, we'll bring your writing to life by practicing rhythmic 'dancing letters' and creating an energetic, agitated style.
Curriculum
About me
I’m a designer, letter artist, and calligrapher based in Katowice, Poland. I’m also an academic teacher at the Graphic Design Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. In 2022, I earned my Ph.D. for my work on methodology and visual systems for teaching calligraphy to graphic design students.
I conducted numerous live calligraphy workshops in Poland and other locations, including Rome, Helsinki, Bratislava, Zaragoza, and Zlín, to name a few. Additionally, since 2016, I have conducted regular calligraphy workshops for the Academy’s students. I’ve been running online classes for five years now, having the opportunity to work with students from all over the world.
What my students say
I chose Filip's courses (I took the foundational and italic courses), drawn by the beauty of his calligraphy, and I was pleased to find him a talented teacher. Filip teaches calmly and precisely, paying attention to both the basics and the more advanced details, and provides a solid guide to learning the style.
Milena
Filip’s workshops are a masterclass in calligraphy instruction. His demonstrations show both the strokes that work and the shapes that don’t, so you really understand the script. The combination of precise, supportive feedback and excellent organization makes his teaching feel both personal and empowering—even online and across the world.
Claudia
This workshop was an incredibly useful experience that gave me solutions to problems I didn't even know I had.
